Functional Job Analysis

What is Functional Job Analysis?

Developed by the Employment and Training Administration of the United States Department of Labor, a Functional Job Analysis is the qualitative analysis of data regarding job information. This information provides unique information based on employee’s behaviour and action, which is further used to write job descriptions.

The Functional Job Analysis breaks down job roles into 7 areas:

  1. Things
  2. Data
  3. Worker instructions
  4. Reasoning
  5. People
  6. Maths
  7. Language

What are the benefits of Functional Job Analysis

A Functional Job Analysis gives organizations a better understanding of employees and job roles. However, it can be hard to standardise an FJA across the organization due to the it’s qualitative nature.
