What is a Whistleblower?

A whistleblower is someone who reports misconduct by an organisation or an individual to someone in a position of authority. Fraud, waste, abuse, and illegality are examples of misconduct. 

Whistleblowers frequently face retaliation from the organisation or individual to whom they report, including, but not limited to termination, demotion, harassment, and discrimination.


What is whistleblowing? 

Whistleblowing is the act of drawing public attention, or the attention of an authority figure, to alleged wrongdoing, misconduct, or unethical behaviour within public, private, or third-sector organisations. Whistleblowers frequently highlight corruption, fraud, bullying, violations of health and safety laws, cover-ups, and discrimination.


What does a Whistleblower do?

Whistleblowers are people who report illegal or unethical behaviour on the part of their employers. They can do this anonymously or by identifying themselves. Whistleblowers can be company employees, contractors, or even customers. They may report activities such as financial fraud, environmental violations, or hazards in the workplace.

Employers frequently retaliate against whistleblowers by firing, demoting, or blacklisting them. Employers could also sue them. Whistleblower protections, on the other hand, are in place to assist in the protection of these individuals.

Whistleblowers are critical in ensuring that businesses act ethically and legally. They serve society well by exposing and addressing wrongdoing.


How do you handle a Whistleblower?

There is no single approach to dealing with a whistleblower because it depends on the circumstances. However, here are some pointers on how to deal with a whistleblower:

  • Take the whistleblower's concerns seriously and listen to them.
  • Assure the whistleblower that he or she is safe and protected.
  • Conduct an investigation into the allegations and take appropriate action.
  • Maintain regular contact with the whistleblower and keep them informed of the investigation's progress.
  • Thank the whistleblower for coming forward.


What should you do when a whistleblower files a complaint? 

The first step after a whistleblower files a complaint is to ensure their safety. The following step is to gather information regarding the complaint. This includes gathering all pertinent documents and conducting interviews with all pertinent individuals. 

Following that, the company should determine the next steps. This may include investigating the complaint, instituting disciplinary action, or referring the complaint to the appropriate authorities.
