Every time a prompt appears in an employee's workflow, like a suggestion to take a break, a reminder to complete a development module, or a nudge toward a healthier lunch option in the canteen app, something is happening beneath the surface that most employees do not notice, and most organisations have not thought carefully enough about.
That something is behavioural design. And AI has made it more powerful, more personalised, and more dominant than it has ever been.
If done well, AI nudges can help employees make better decisions with less effort, such as completing training before deadlines, taking recovery time before burnout sets in, and flagging when a manager's communication patterns suggest their team is disengaging. Done badly, they can manipulate behaviour without the employee's awareness, steer autonomous decisions, and systematically undermine the autonomy of the very people the organisation claims to support.
This blog helps HR leaders understand what they are actually deploying when they deploy AI nudges, and what questions they need to answer honestly before they go live. But first, it is worth being precise about what a nudge actually is.
What is a nudge?

They should have the record of what data the nudge uses, what behaviour it is designed to produce, who has access to the outputs, and what happens when an employee's behaviour does not respond to it.
