The funny side of HR!

When you work in HR, you come across many funny situations. Seeing how HR is an integral part of the employee lifecycle, they have the greatest reserves of funny experiences and stories to share. This week, let us take a look at some of these situations with a funny bone.

Basically, we will be looking into 3 major categories.

  • The most ridiculous interview questions.
  • Creative excuses made by employees for being late.
  • An internet trend that tickled us for a while.

Now that we have finished gathering our thoughts, here are some of the funniest things that an HR professional has heard.

Brain in a box

1. Ridiculous interview questions

The candidate must be ready to answer any kind of question during an interview. But, sometimes there are questions that make imagining a solution hard or fill your head with images that are just funny. Take this interview question from Whole Foods Market for instance:

“Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses?”

How does one answer that without cracking up first?

Industry leaders like Apple, Google, Zappos, Dell and more set this trend. The significance of answering these oddball questions is known only to the ones posing these questions. Or not. The jury is still out on that, I guess, it’s how you choose to look at it. Here is a list of some more bizarre interview questions.

  1. “If you were a pizza delivery man, how do you benefit from scissors?”- Apple
  2. “If you were a box of cereal, what would you be and why?”- Bed, Bath and Beyond
  3. “Why is a tennis ball fuzzy?”- Xerox
  4. “How many square feet of pizza is eaten in the US each year?”- Goldman Sachs
  5. “Describe to me the process and benefits of wearing a seatbelt.” -Active Network

2. Creative excuses made by employees

There is at least one person who is known for their legendary lack of time management. Why? They just don’t make it on time, be it regular office hours or a meeting.

Many managers have just stopped bothering about timing and remain more output-oriented when it comes to them. However, once in a while, there is a reason given by an employee explaining why they are late for work which cracks up the whole office. Sometimes, even the truth is hard to believe in because of its bizarre nature. For example, here’s how an employee justified being late to work one day-

“I was late because of traffic congestion on the highway. A Zebra was running down the highway causing all vehicles to halt.”

How bizarre is that? Would you buy it if you were the manager? What trumps this is that it turned out that the employee was actually telling the truth!

Moving to more creative excuses made by employees, these made us laugh hard:

  1. “I had a rough night, woke up on somebody else’s porch, three blocks away from where I live!”
  2. “I thought it was a national holiday…. Wait, Haloween is not one?!”
  3. “Hey, I got here before everyone else, I just fell asleep in the car”
  4. “My dog's head got stuck in the grill”
  5. “I went to the old campus, I totally forgot we moved here 6 months ago.”

3. The internet trend

Remember the internet trend we had mentioned earlier? It was the trending hashtag on twitter #FiveWordsToRuinAJobInterview. It generated some of the funniest responses from the global workforce. Even while being an old trend, it shows just how creative people can be when asked to botch a job interview with just 5 words. There have been many creative and funny tweets that have entertained us and we'd love. tosee your suggestions in the comment box below!
