What is Job Rotation?

Job rotation is a method where employees from one nature of job are shifted to the another job through which the employee would be given an opportunity to perform various jobs, which would enhances his/her abilities, experience and capacity to perform various jobs if there should arise an occurrence of exigency. The objective of job rotation is to work on the proficiency of the employees and work ought not be hampered or affected on the off chance that shortfall of any worker in the organization.

What are the advantages of Job Rotation?

1. Succession planning

One of the main advantages of job rotation in human resource management is to develop a pool of employees who can be replaced immediately when someone retires, leaves or is removed from the organization.

2. Testing skills and competencies

Job rotation allows the employers to test the employees skills, competencies, his strengths and weaknesses, and after close analysis assign task or role that best fit the employee where they excel. At the end the only the right fit employee will help achieve goals and objectives of the business.

3. Career pathing

Job rotation helps employees to shape their career with respect to exploring new areas in their work and find their interests and calling towards. Employees who work at an organization that encourages their career pathing might not feel the need to change jobs resulting in more valuable output at the present job.

4. Eliminates boredom

For the most part, employees becoming disengaged at their jobs is a gradual thing and hence job rotation can engage employees and prevent them from boredom. This could help break up the monotony of an employee’s day to day.

5. Increase productivity

The monotony of the job is reduced in job rotation resulting to increased curiosity and learning which in turn brings in more productivity at work.

6. Knowing the company

Job rotation is considered as the best practice in order for the employees to know all the verticals and functions of the company.

What are the disadvantages of Job rotation

1. High cost

Job rotation comes with constant trainings to be given along with the shift of employees from one nature of job to another, this means high amount of cost has to be invested in these training programs which is one of the major disadvantage of Job Rotation.

2. Not flexible to all industries

For some industries and roles, job rotation is not practically. For instance for job roles for highly skilled positions where employees need years of training to do their jobs can not be replaced.

3. Can result into loss of business

One of the most devastating disadvantages of job rotation is that your business could take a hit. Because employees are learning new skills, there could be some errors. Customers could become frustrated by confused employees who make mistakes. If operations don’t run smoothly, your bottom line could suffer.
